December Volunteer Workday

Felling the last Laburnum trunk with an axe

Felling the last Laburnum trunk with an axe

During a lovely sunny day, we finished coppicing the Laburnum. Above is a picture of Nick felling the last trunk with an axe. Below, the stool after the last trunk had fallen. After a delicious shared lunch we started coppicing a stand of Hazel.

Our next work day will be on Sunday 12th January, 10am until 4pm. We will be continuing with the hazel coppice and perhaps starting some hedge laying. All are welcome to join us, please contact us for details and directions.

All Year Round – Winter Solstice

Our last All Year Round celebration for 2013 will be for Winter Solstice on Sunday 22nd December, 2pm-5pm, at the Dyfed Permaculture Farm Trust

This time the theme is inspired by the Sami reindeer herders of Northern Europe. We will be making Reindeer masks then learning a Sami Reindeer herders call / song. Pamela Gaunt (co-founder and organiser of the Dragon Festival in Newcastle Emlyn, amongst many other things) will be doing some seasonal storytelling. There will be a solstice fire to warm ourselves by.

We are planning on having a seasonal “afternoon tea”, so please bring a small amount of food to share.

Please dress warmly and for outdoor play.

£3 per child, reductions if you are bringing more then one, adults free. Please contact me if you need directions.

Above are pictures of some of the wonderful Waxcap fungi we have found on the Top Field of the Trust, with identification where possible

This family of mushroom have a beautiful array of colours and are often waxy or greasy in texture. In the main they are restricted to low nutrient grasslands that have not been ploughed or fertilised. This kind of habitat is increasingly rare in the UK countryside, but is exactly what we have here at the Trust. Just as this leads to a large diversity of meadow flowers in the summer, we are treated to a different but equally beautiful display of fungi in the autumn.

The other classic site to find waxcap and associated fungi are churchyards and burial grounds. These have usually escaped the disturbance of the surrounding farmland and can be a haven for many threatened species. We are extraordinarily lucky to have Penboyr churchyard (os ref: SN 360363) on our doorstep, which is becoming recognised as perhaps one of the best sites to see these fungi in Carmarthenshire, if not the whole of Wales.

It is a truly amazing site and a visit is highly recommended. A particular highlight is the Violet Coral fungusClavaria zollingeri – a very rare mushroom which is on the Red Data list. Below is a picture taken on a recent fungal walk in the churchyard, led by Bruce Langridge of the National Botanical Gardens of Wales.

Celebrating Halloween with All Year Round

Kite Making during the Halloween All Year Round

Kite Making during the Halloween All Year Round

The wind was blowing well for our Halloween All Year Round.

We started off making Halloween Kites, using black bin bags, split cane and sellotape! When decorated with spooky faces, the kites looked very effective and flew well despite the strength of the wind.

After a warming cuppa and some delicious cakes, we settled down to watch Emily’s Halloween shadow puppet show. She told us the legend of the witch Ceridwen and Taliesin, beautifully illustrated with her shadow puppets. Afterwards, the children were invited to have a go with the puppets, as can be seen in the photo below.

More lovely pictures can be seen on the All Year Round facebook page.

Our next event will be for Winter Solstice on 22nd December. Croeso Cynnes i Bawb! A Warm Welcome to All!

Coppicing Laburnum on a Volunteer Workday

The laburnum stools we are coppicing. A volunteer using the felling axe.

Eight of us gathered on Sunday 13th October for our Volunteer Workday. The main task of the day was to begin coppicing some Laburnums. All of the work was achieved using hand tools, many of which we have just purchased with a grant from Environment Wales.

Nick and Barbara of Coppice Wood Collage showed volunteers how to fell using our new American felling axe and a couple of people had fun trying out this new skill. The Two-Man Cross Cut Saw also got it’s first outing, as did an amazing pole saw which did sterling work clearing branches that were overhanging an access track.

The Trust land has many Laburnums in it’s hedgerow, as is typical of this corner of Dyfed. In late June / early July they give a glorious display, being covered with long racemes of yellow flowers. The trees are multi-stemmed, presumably as a result of coppicing in the past. As these trunks become very large, the trees can become increasingly unstable. In the last two summers, we have had incidences of trunks in full leaf being blown out of the hedgerow. As the trunks lean out from, and sometimes fall out of the hedgerow the base of the tree starts to crack, letting water and rot enter. The trees start to look less healthy, with leaves yellowing and falling early in the season.

We have started a rolling plan to coppice a stretch of Laburnums every year. The aim is to rejuvenate them and ensure their healthy survival into the future. The trees respond extremely well, showing vigorous growth in the following seasons and returning to flower within a few years.

The resulting timber is not wasted. Large pieces can be used for fence posts. It lasts extremely well in the ground, and sometimes will even take root and produce a new tree – we have a few recent example on the Trust land. (Local folk law says this is how so much Laburnum became established in this area. Laburnum was imported and used for fence posts. Many of these took root, leading to the multitude of Laburnums now seen in local hedgerows.)

Longer lengths can be used in building. It makes excellent firewood if dried for two to three years, being dense and giving a hot, long lasting burn. The wood is very beautiful, with a deep red / brown heartwood contrasting with a yellow sap wood, and is popular with wood turners. As many parts of the tree are poisonous, perhaps it is better to reserves its use for items that will not be used with food!

We will be continuing the work on the Laburnum on our next workday on Sunday 10th November, as well as starting work on some Willow and Hazel coppice. All are welcome to join us! For more details and directions, please contact us.

All Year Round – Harvest Festival

Apple pressing in full swing!

Apple pressing in full swing!

We had a wonderful time during our recent All Year Round Harvest Festival celebration.

Lenshina and Ian bought along their home made apple press and several people bought along apples. Soon the group were working together, washing and chopping apples, crushing them into pulp (using the low-tech but effective method of bashing them in a bucket with a large stick!) then transferring them to the press for the final extraction of juice. Much juice was drunk on the day and there was enough for everyone to take some home. Some was put aside to be made into cider for sharing at a future All Year Round.

We also enjoyed making “corn dolls” out of straw, playing co-operative games with a parachute, cooking delicious pitta bread on the fire, talking, singing, dancing, tree climbing and free play!

Our next celebration will be for Halloween, on Sunday 27th October. All are welcome to join us. Details to be posted here soon. For more information please contact us.

Volunteer Workday – Coppicing Laburnum, Sunday 13th October

Mature Laburnum in full flower in a hedge at the Trust

Mature Laburnum in full flower in a hedge at the Trust

The next volunteer workday at Dyfed Permaculture Farm Trust will be on Sunday 13th October, 10am until about 4pm.

This month the plan is to coppice some aged laburnum trees to rejuvenate them. The aim is to do the work using hand tools. We have recently received a grant from Environment Wales to purchase tools, so now have some high quality hand tools, such as a cross cut saw and bilhooks, available for volunteers to use.

We will also be looking to make maximum use of the resulting timber eg looking for pieces suitable for use as fence posts.

Workdays are a great way to visit the Trust, meet like minded people, share your skills or learn new ones. There is usually a lively conversation going on throughout the day covering a wide range of topics and, of course, there is the delicious bring and share lunch!

All are welcome to join us. Please bring work gloves and a contribution for lunch.

If you can’t make this workday maybe we will see you at a future one? Workdays are held throughout the year, usually on the second Sunday of every month. Dates and planned activities will be posted here. For more information about workdays or other activities at the Trust please contact us
