Sustainable Collection of Lichen for Dyeing Wool

All this wild weather has blown down a lot of branches and twigs around the Trust. It is an ill wind that blows no good they say, and on the advise of Susan Martin, we have been busy collecting any fallen twigs and branches that are covered in Lichen. These will be stored undercover ready for use in the summer as a dye source during the Natural Dyeing Workshop that Susan will be leading at the Trust on Sunday 17th August.

As Lichen is very slow growing, we will only be using Lichen that has fallen and will not harvest it from the trees. The various textures are really interesting and we are looking forward to seeing what colours the lichens will dye the wool.

All Year Round – Candlemas

Small Bees Wax Candles, with Moulds in the Background

Small Bees Wax Candles, with Moulds in the Background

On Sunday 2nd February the All Year Round group gathered to celebrate Candlemas.

We started the session making small beeswax candles, as can be seen in the pictures above. Molten beeswax was poured into silicon ice cube moulds. At the same time a length of wick was “primed” – dipped into molten wax then left to set. The candles were turned out when just set and a hole made through the centre with a knitting needle – an easy job in the still warm wax. Then a length of primed wick was threaded through and the candles were complete. The wax smells lovely and is a beautiful rich yellow colour.

The showers held off long enough for us to enjoy some co-operative games outside. We also cooked some simple bread on a camp fire which tasted great with lashing of butter and jam.
Our next gathering is for Spring Equinox / Easter on Sunday 23rd March. Croeso Cynnes i Bawb!

Reindeer at All Year Round Winter Solstice

Making Masks

Making Masks

Just before Christmas we held our last All Year Round of 2013 with a celebration for the Winter solstice.

The day was themed around the Sami reindeer herders of Northern Europe. We made reindeer masks then learnt a Reindeer Herders song. After a delicious bring and share tea, Pamela Gaunt told a wonderful story about the lives of the Sami reindeer herders, and the adventures of two Sami children as they travel to see the Mountain King during the dark of the Northern winter. There was plenty of audience participation singing the song we had learnt earlier and the children providing atmosphere with percussion instruments.

Our next All Year Round will be for Imbolc / Candlemas on Sunday 2nd February. A warm welcome to all!

All Year Round – Winter Solstice

Our last All Year Round celebration for 2013 will be for Winter Solstice on Sunday 22nd December, 2pm-5pm, at the Dyfed Permaculture Farm Trust

There will be a solstice fire to warm ourselves by.

We are planning on having a seasonal “afternoon tea”, so please bring a small amount of food to share.

Please dress warmly and for outdoor play.

Above are pictures of some of the wonderful Waxcap fungi we have found on the Top Field of the Trust, with identification where possible

This family of mushroom have a beautiful array of colours and are often waxy or greasy in texture. In the main they are restricted to low nutrient grasslands that have not been ploughed or fertilised. This kind of habitat is increasingly rare in the UK countryside, but is exactly what we have here at the Trust. Just as this leads to a large diversity of meadow flowers in the summer, we are treated to a different but equally beautiful display of fungi in the autumn.

The other classic site to find waxcap and associated fungi are churchyards and burial grounds. These have usually escaped the disturbance of the surrounding farmland and can be a haven for many threatened species. We are extraordinarily lucky to have Penboyr churchyard (os ref: SN 360363) on our doorstep, which is becoming recognised as perhaps one of the best sites to see these fungi in Carmarthenshire, if not the whole of Wales.

It is a truly amazing site and a visit is highly recommended. A particular highlight is the Violet Coral fungusClavaria zollingeri – a very rare mushroom which is on the Red Data list. Below is a picture taken on a recent fungal walk in the churchyard, led by Bruce Langridge of the National Botanical Gardens of Wales.

Celebrating Halloween with All Year Round

Kite Making during the Halloween All Year Round

Kite Making during the Halloween All Year Round

The wind was blowing well for our Halloween All Year Round.

We started off making Halloween Kites, using black bin bags, split cane and sellotape! When decorated with spooky faces, the kites looked very effective and flew well despite the strength of the wind.

After a warming cuppa and some delicious cakes, we settled down to watch Emily’s Halloween shadow puppet show. She told us the legend of the witch Ceridwen and Taliesin, beautifully illustrated with her shadow puppets. Afterwards, the children were invited to have a go with the puppets, as can be seen in the photo below.

More lovely pictures can be seen on the All Year Round facebook page.

Our next event will be for Winter Solstice on 22nd December. Croeso Cynnes i Bawb! A Warm Welcome to All!
